How to play

  1. Play these after an easy round. Starting with abstracts kills the momentum for casual groups.
  2. Allow teams to guess the concept, not the exact wording. "Inflation" should count for "the economy is broken".
  3. Give a 90-second timer instead of 60 for this tier — the extra half minute pays for itself in laughs.
  4. Skip any word that stalls for more than 40 seconds. A hard round should be funny, not painful.

FAQ

What are the hardest charades words?

Abstract nouns without a physical form: time travel, inflation, deja vu, a midlife crisis, cancel culture. There is no literal action to perform.

How do you act out an abstract word?

Build a scene rather than a single action. For "inflation", mime paying more and more for the same item. Metaphor beats literal.

Is it better to play hard charades in teams or pairs?

Pairs work better for abstract words — fewer people means more guesses per minute and less shouting over each other.

How long should each turn be for hard words?

90 seconds. A minute is enough for concrete words but not for abstracts.
